The American Heart Association announced that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, a leading expert in pulmonary hypertension and precision medicine, has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal. Maron’s tenure begins with the July 6, 2026 issue, succeeding Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004-2016. The appointment underscores the Association’s commitment to advancing transformative cardiovascular science.
Maron, board-certified in clinical cardiology, is recognized globally for mechanistic and clinical advances in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. He serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also co-executive directs the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. His career bridges basic, translational, clinical, and population health research, with a focus on how pulmonary vascular disease affects the heart.
New features under Maron’s leadership include a Clinician Lighthouse article series for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests and patient management, a Clinician’s Corner for practical decision-making, and graphic abstracts for all research articles. The journal will also introduce a Patient’s Corner to present key content to the public, alongside expanded weekly eTOC alerts with brief summaries. The manuscript submission process will be streamlined with an accelerated, transparent review timeline. Key clinical trials and guideline manuscripts will be supported by perspective bundles offering context and insight. Additional upgrades will roll out in the first year.
Maron is joined by a new editorial team, including Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Ten deputy editors oversee specific sections: Fundamental Sciences (Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA), Translational Science (Matthew L. Steinhauser, M.D.), Clinical Cardiology (Jennifer E. Ho, M.D., FAHA, and Ryan J. Tedford, M.D., FAHA), Clinical Trials (Adrian F. Hernandez, M.D., M.H.S., FAHA, and P. Gabriel Steg, M.D.), Community Health (Tiffany Powell-Wiley, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA), Population Health (Mercedes Carnethon, Ph.D., FAHA), Global Cardiovascular Health (Ana Mocumbi, M.D., Ph.D.), and AI for Process and Science (Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA). The journal will be supported by 27 associate and guest editors.
Maron’s scientific impact includes over 260 publications, six patents, and leadership in federally funded research. He discovered novel molecular mechanisms of vascular fibrosis, clarified clinical risk in pulmonary hypertension, co-led AI projects for automated diagnosis, and advanced network medicine and computational science. He previously served in editorial roles for multiple journals, including Circulation, The Lancet, and JACC.
Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee, said, “Dr. Maron’s appointment underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science... His vision, scientific breadth and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success.” Maron expressed honor at leading the journal, stating, “I am energized to forge a new path that strengthens and expands on the legacy of Drs. Hill and Loscalzo. Our mission is to reinvigorate cardiovascular science and fast track information to readers with additional transparency.”
Circulation is part of the American Heart Association’s portfolio of 14 peer-reviewed journals, each editorially independent. The Association receives over 85% of its revenue from non-corporate sources. For more information, visit the American Heart Association’s newsroom at newsroom.heart.org.
