The "Charm'tastic Mile" of Baltimore, a trademarked 1.3-mile corridor connecting Downtown-West, the Inner Harbor, and Harbor East, is pursuing a landmark 100-year agreement with the City of Baltimore and Mayor Brandon Scott. Valued at approximately $1.25 billion over the century-long term, the proposal outlines escalating annual payments: $5 million per year for the first 25 years, $10 million for the next 25, $15 million for the following 25, and $20 million for the final 25 years, averaging $12.5 million annually. The agreement is intended to be signed during the 2026 calendar year, according to a press release from the organization.
The "Charm'tastic Mile" was introduced to Baltimore on April 25, 2016, and is recognized as the only registered trademark street in Baltimore and the State of Maryland, as listed with the USPTO. This past April marked its 10th anniversary, which was honored by Mayor Brandon Scott with a Certificate of Recognition and by Governor Wes Moore with a Governor's Citation. The anniversary date also coincides with the introduction of the iconic Domino Sugars neon sign in 1951, exactly 65 years prior.
The proposed 100-year agreement aims to cement the corridor's place among America's most famous streets, alongside others like the Magnificent Mile, Rodeo Drive, and the Las Vegas Strip, all of which hold USPTO trademark registrations. The "Charm'tastic Mile" was published as a registered mark on September 15, 2020, and its proponents argue that as the popularity of famous streets and sports culture grows globally, trademarked streets will become larger brands in the global economy. The agreement is seen as a catalyst for the city's ongoing development, including the nearly $1 billion Inner Harbor construction project.
The announcement comes from Derrick E Vaughan, an analyst for Famous Streets & Sports Culture In America, who highlighted the historical significance of the proposal, stating it is "more than history for Baltimore, it's history for America."
